I've been making theatre and film for about 25 years, give or take. I was trained as a composer and still do score my own films. I sort of fell into producing and loved the community building aspect. The best producers intuitively know how to inspire and support every creative member of the team so that everyone is performing at the top of their game.
What I've found most interesting about directing, particularly film where the financial stakes are sort of in your face all the time, is how a director absolutely must get comfortable with saying "no" and understand that small disappointments cannot threaten to destroy the enthusiasm everyone has for a project that's worthy of our undivided exhaustive attention.
I've been writing about the psychological effects of the pandemic a lot lately. In fact I wrote and perform a show about it called A Nagging Feeling Best Not Ignored. I'm pretty sure it'll be decades before we untangle the myriad effects of the past couple years.
I just hope we can all learn to reconnect cause lately the social fabric feels more than a little frayed. No?
